❓ -WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN-❓

3 things I learnt this week that ponders what it might mean (or not) to be a man living in the modern world.

1) Fatherhood

I am soon to become a father so, naturally, been thinking about this alot lately.

I am super excited but also mindful that my life is going to significantly change so I want to be best equipped to be able to adapt and be the best father I can possibly be from the jump!

I was sent a recent Modern Wisdom Podcast where Chris sat down with Dr Anna Machin where they discussed the question: Do You Actually Need A Father to Raise A Child?

In short: The answer is absolutely!

Full episode can be found here

The below clip was an interesting take away for me on fatherhoods effect on mens testosterone levels...

When you do become a father for the first time your testosterone drops significantly (upto a third!)

2) One man died without ever seeing a woman in his life....

Legend has it that a Greek Orthodox monk called Michael Tolotos died in 1938 at the age of 82, without EVER seeing a woman. Be very surprised, the man never knew, in his 82 years of existence, what a woman looked like.

Read more about it here

In Summary:

πŸ“œ A monk named Michael Tolotos died in 1938 at 82 without ever seeing a woman.

🏞️ Michael was abandoned at a monastery after his mother's death and lived his life within its walls.

🚷 A law from 1060 banning women and animals on Mount Athos was in force, and Michael never left the monastery.

β›ͺ Even today, only male tourists are allowed inside the monastery, and monks can't engage in certain activities.

🌐 Michael's story is scarcely talked about, making it hard to find information online or in books.

3) Fathers Effects on Educational Outcomes

Children whose fathers read, play, sing and draw with them show a β€œsmall but significant” increase in their educational attainment at primary school, according to research that suggests just 10 minutes a day could make a difference.

In Summary:

πŸ“š Research from the University of Leeds indicates that fathers have a unique and significant impact on children's educational outcomes.

πŸ“– Children benefit from fathers who engage in activities such as reading, playing, singing, and drawing, showing a small but meaningful increase in educational attainment, especially in primary school.

πŸ€Ήβ€β™‚οΈ The recommended involvement includes as little as 10 minutes a day, emphasizing the importance of regular and diverse interactions.

🏫 The study suggests that fathers should actively participate in playful and educational activities, enriching cognitive and language development in children.

🧠 The positive effects of father involvement were noted both before a child starts primary school and at the age of five, particularly enhancing achievements in key stage 1 assessments, with a slight emphasis on mathematics.

🀝 While mothers impact emotional and social behaviors, fathers' engagement plays a crucial role in educational attainment, emphasizing the need for shared childcare responsibilities.

πŸŽ“ The study recommends that schools and early education providers actively involve fathers, and even proposes considering father engagement in school inspections.

🌐 The research, based on a sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England, underscores the positive impact of fathers regardless of the child's gender, ethnicity, age, or household income.

πŸ’Ό Encouraging and supporting fathers to share childcare responsibilities with mothers from an early stage is highlighted as critical for better academic performance.

πŸ“° Published findings based on the Millennium Cohort Study suggest that father involvement remains beneficial despite potential challenges like early poverty.
