• 🍼 This decline in marriage rates has resulted in a higher percentage of babies being born to unmarried parents.
• 🇮🇸 Iceland has the highest percentage of live births to unmarried parents at 69.4%.
• 🇫🇷 France follows closely with 63.5%, and 🇵🇹 Portugal has 60.0% of live births outside of marriage or civil partnership.
• 🇧🇬 Bulgaria is an outlier in Eastern Europe, with 59.9% of live births outside of marriage.
• 🇹🇷 Turkey (2.8%), 🇧🇾 Belarus (13.0%), and 🇲🇰 North Macedonia (13.7%) have the lowest percentages in Europe.
• 💍 Being unmarried doesn’t necessarily mean these parents won’t marry later, but marriage offers legal recognition and potential financial advantages for parents and children.
